Tower Federal Credit Union Employees "Shape Up" for Better Health

Laurel, MD—An increasing number of businesses are finding new ways to help employees take better care of their health. Tower Federal Credit Union, headquartered in Laurel, Md., has capitalized on that trend. One example is the credit union’s recent "Shape Up" fitness challenge.

During the eight-week challenge, 70 Tower employees formed teams and tracked their physical activity, nutritional intake and weight loss. Employees received tips on nutrition and fitness activities and exercised in Tower's free on-site gym facility. At the end of the challenge, the weight loss total was a whopping 226 pounds.

"Shape Up" challenge winners included Joyce Conley, Patricia Barlow, Maria Cook, Caroline Evans and Darlene Herman from Tower Title Services, Tower's in-house title company. Each received a trophy and gift card for achieving the highest average weight loss. Out of the 226 pounds, the winning team lost 45 pounds. Another group of Tower employees, appropriately called "The Pep-toes," each received gift cards for completing 100 percent of the program.

"I'm glad that Tower has made the employee wellness program available. The activities that we participated in were fun and I can see a big difference in my physical health," says Cook, a Senior Title Processor at Tower Title Services. "I especially enjoyed the camaraderie we had while working together during the 'Shape Up' challenge."

In addition to the fitness challenge, Tower offers Lunch-n-Learn sessions, health fairs, exercise classes, and health screenings. The credit union’s award-winning "Wealth of Wellness" employee wellness program, offered in conjunction with corporate health and fitness vendor Well Advantage®, has received numerous awards including an Innovation in Wellness Award from the Howard County Health Department. Tower has also received recognition by the Baltimore Business Journal as one of the Baltimore area’s healthiest employers.
